Una paloma mensajera es una variedad de paloma bravía (Columba livia) que se entrena para que vuelva a su palomar desde largas distancias llevando algún tipo de mensaje o carta, llamadas columbogramas, en un tubo anular que se les coloca en una pata.
Según la tradición bíblica, la paloma mensajera más antigua sería la que le llevó a Noé el mensaje del retroceso de las aguas después del Diluvio al regresar con una rama de olivo en el pico, convirtiéndose en el símbolo de la paz (paloma de la paz). Lo cierto es que la utilización de las palomas como medio de comunicación se conoce desde la Antigüedad. Los griegos transmitían a las ciudades los nombres de los ganadores de los Juegos Olímpicos por medio de palomas y las legiones romanas contaban con palomares móviles que acogían millares de ejemplares. Los árabes perfeccionaron su uso y las utilizaron, por ejemplo, en sus luchas contra los cruzados en Tierra Santa para conocer sus movimientos. Existieron servicios de correo regulares por medio de palomas mensajeras y se emitieron sellos de uso exclusivo para estos servicios.
La utilización de la paloma mensajera como medio de comunicación disminuyó con la aparición de la telegrafía sin hilos. Actualmente su uso es casi exclusivamente deportivo aunque los diferentes ejércitos mantienen unidades especializadas para casos de conflictos militares que lleven aparejado el colapso de las comunicaciones.

Los colúmbidos (Columbidae) son una familia de aves del orden Columbiformes que incluye las palomas, las tórtolas y formas afines, en total unas 308 especies. Son parientes del extinto dodo, que pertenece al mismo orden, pero a distinta familia.
Los colúmbidos se distribuye por todo el mundo; la mayor diversidad de especies la tiene la ecozona indomalaya y la ecozona de Australasia.
Características
Los colúmbidos tienen un cuerpo y cuello robusto y un pico delgado y corto con ceras carnosas. Los nidos, normalmente débiles, están elaborados con ramitas, y los huevos, normalmente dos, son incubados por ambos sexos. Las palomas se alimentan de semillas y frutos. Alimentan a sus pichones con una secreción denominada leche del buche que se secreta por células especiales. Ambos sexos producen esta substancia muy nutritiva para alimentar al joven.
A parte de tener un gran sentido de la orientación, la paloma es una de las aves que más rápido vuela, alcanzando los 56 km/h.[1]
Las palomas jóvenes se denominan pichones y las personas que crían palomas se denominan colombófilos.
Convivencia con el ser humano
Algunas especies se han adaptado al entorno urbano, hasta tal punto que se ha convertido en un problema en ciudades como Venecia, donde han tenido que tomar medidas porque la corrosión provocada por las defecaciones de este animal están deteriorando gravemente el patrimonio artístico y arquitectónico de dicha ciudad.
Ilusionismo
La tórtola turca es la más utilizada en actos de ilusionismo por su gran docilidad, principalmente del macho.
Enfermedades relacionadas
Estar en contacto con excrementos de palomas puede representar un riesgo para la salud. Se conoce que al menos tres enfermedades humanas están asociadas con los excrementos de las palomas: histoplasmosis, criptococosis y psitacosis.[2]
Simbolismo
La paloma es también un animal con significado simbólico. En la Biblia se relata que Noé dejó ir una paloma desde el arca después del Diluvio para intentar encontrar tierra firme y que ésta regresó con una rama de olivo en el pico. Además, en el Nuevo Testamento, el Espíritu Santo desciende en forma de paloma sobre Jesucristo en el momento en que éste es bautizado.(Génesis 8:11, Isaías 59:11, Mateo 3:16; 10:16; 21:12)
La paloma es el símbolo del candor, la sencillez y la inocencia. Estaba consagrada a Venus que la llevaba en la mano y la ataba a su carro según Apuleyo. Eliano añade que algunas veces se transformaba ella misma en paloma por lo que estaba privado a sus sacerdotes el comerlas. Homero cuenta que unas palomas se tomaron el cuidado de alimentar a Júpiter, fábula fundada en la circunstancia de que una mima palabra significa en lengua fenicia sacerdote y paloma.[3]
Los habitantes de Ascalonia tenían un gran respeto por estas aves en las que creían transformarse después de la muerte, no atreviéndose a comer ni matar ninguna por el temor de comerse a sus mismos padres y alimentaban con particular cuidado a todas las palomas que nacían en la ciudad. Eran estas aves también tenidas en mucho respeto por los asirios porque creían que el alma de Semirámide, su reina, ascendió al cielo en forma de paloma. Sófocles dice que algunas palomas de la floresta de Dodona anunciaron a Hércules el fin de sus días.[3]
Actualmente, la representación de una paloma blanca con una rama de olivo en el pico es un símbolo de paz y pureza en las sociedades occidentales, imagen inmortalizada por Pablo Picasso en su Paloma de la paz.
